Bill Owens - Photographer, Brewer, Distiller, Ranconteur
Bill Owens, Photographer best known for his historic book and cult-classic “Suburbia“ published in 1972 by Rolling Stone joins host Scott Sheppard for an in-depth interview about his life and work. Bill began his career in photojournalism and in his adventures on the job captured some insightful images of daily life in America in a photo essay shot in Livermore California’s Amador Valley in 1972 titled simply “Suburbia“.
Rather than remain a struggling photographer, Owens parlayed his hobby as a brewer into one of California’s first brew pubs, and later launched “American Brewer Magazine†which he runs today. He is also the president and founder of the American Distilling Institute, and at one time owned several breweries.
Bill’s colorful approach to visual story telling is exemplified in his books. He adopted his photography to digital, which is a decision he feels truly fits his current projects. Currently working on several new photo essay books including “Leisure“, “Food” and an update to “Surburbia”. Bill spends much of his time traveling and observing the population and their daily lives. His transition to digital has also allowed him the ability to capture movies and create entertaining short films which are featured on his website at: http://www.billowens.com
