Amadou Diallo, Photographer and Author of “Mastering Digital Black and White Photography†joins host Scott Sheppard to share tips and techniques on getting the best results for black and white output in your digital workflow. Amadou is a fine art photographer, specializing in still life imagery who has extensive experience in creating museum quality black and white prints. One of the key tips is to capture your image in RAW format, he and Scott then discuss the details of his digital darkroom. Amadou appreciates that the new applications including Apple’s Aperture and Adobe Lightroom are geared toward the needs of professional photographers.
When converting an image from color to black and white there are some considerations but Amadou feels that the built-in settings in Adobe PhotoShop CS3 do a great job in setting the overall switch. The key to good black and white images is contrast and the new levels of control in CS3 allow you to customize specific areas of the image to control the final tonal and other range. Amadou created a special website with detailed information and a free chapter of his new book at: http://www.masteringdigitalbwbook.com
In addition to running a successful fine art studio based in Brooklyn, NY, Mr. Diallo also runs a series of workshops on digital printmaking. He offers services for photographers wishing to create high-quality gallery prints and is one the first print studios to be designated a Certified Piezography Printer by Cone Editions Press (developers of Digital Platinum, Piezography, and iQuads inks and software). Erik Sowder, President & John Baker, Vice President and General Counsel, ExpoImaging joins Inside Digital Photo to discuss tips on how to achieve the best white balance for your camera. Erik and John speak about how they developed their popular ExpoDisc product. ExpoImaging is a family run business that has grown significantly in the past few years in support of the digital SLR market. Hear their insights on why relying on “auto white balance†isn’t always the best solution during critical image capture. ExpoDisc provides a quick way to obtain a custom white balance that corrects your lighting and improves your image at the point of capture. They have developed some video tutorials that will be available on their website soon.
The ExpoDisc was originally developed as an exposure and output tool but has now expanded with a line of products designed to assist in all, but especially in low-light or difficult lighting situations. They have products for photographic and video use, and custom products calibrated for portraiture. They also have a product ExpoAperture2 Depth-of-Field Guide, a unique tool which instantly shows you the relationships between focal length, focus distance, aperture and resulting depth-of-field.
