IDP Special Edition – Vincent Versace on Nikon D3
Listen NOW…
Vincent Versace, Photographer, Trainer, and Author one of Nikon’s “Legend Behind the Lens” and premier product beta tester joins host Scott Sheppard for a first hand look on Nikon’s newest digital SLR the Nikon D3 and it’s companion model the Nikon D300.
Vincent shares some details on the unique features of this great new digital SLR. The Nikon D3 is a true full frame camera that can handle a broad range of exposures, ISO 200 to 6400, enabling image capture in almost complete darkness. The images captured are high quality, with a lot less noise at higher ISO settings. It sees full frame and DX lenses, and knows the difference and automatically adjusts to either lens setting. It includes a 5:4 mode setting designed for wedding photographers. The D3 has built in scene recognition that identifies objects and people in the picture, and automatically adjusts the white balance for each image composition. It includes 51 segment focusing, and a completely redesigned light lens system that captures the light information in each channel.
Color correction on image capture is built in, the LCD screen is enhanced allowing photographers to make focus decisions off the view screen, includes two UDMA compatible card slots, and HDMI out. It includes a Live View with handheld and tripod mode, and a wireless adaptor which means if you use Capture NX in your workflow you can control the camera and view the images remotely from external monitors. Although the Nikon D3 is a 12.1 Mega pixel camera, Vincent explained that due to the 14-bit sensor and unique image processing algorithms give a better image file result than some other cameras which will be shipping with 21 Mega pixels. The last point on the D3 is the ability to refocus the auto focus and program it to your unique settings which include better performance for infrared photography.
Their lenses and other product development including their software Nikon Capture NX are designed to be backward compatible with their previous lenses and camera models. This approach may slow down their ability to bring the final product to market but ensures that any of your existing Nikon equipment will work well with the new cameras and accessories.
Vincent has been shooting with Nikon equipment for his entire career, and feels that the Nikon D3 “is one of the most spectacular camera I have ever seen” and it is designed completely for the needs of a professional photographer. Although Nikon sponsors and support’s Vincent’s work, Vincent has the ability to work with any brand equipment and he clearly chooses Nikon.
